Calendar

By papal decree, the Gregorian Calendar replace the Julian in 1582. Only part of the world heeded the change. England and the American colonies finally followed suit in 1752, and Wednesday, September 2, 1752 was immediately followed by Thursday, September 14, 1752.

  • the calender needed to be changed because each year (from vernal equinox to vernal equinox) is 365.2422 days long. the julian tried to compensate by having 365 days + 1 leap day every 4 years. slowly the seasons were falling out of sink with the calender, about 10 days by the change in the 1500s. the gregorian calender is more acurate because it has the normal 365 days +1 leap day ever four years except years divisable by 100 but including years divisible by 100 and 4 (ie. 2000). with the gregorian calander there is an average of 365.2425 days a year, compared to the 365.25 of the julian. when pope gregory told the people that the day following oct 4th would be oct 15th there were riots because the people thought that the pope was actually shortening their lives by 10 days. yeah... i know i'm smart.. this is what college teaches ya... no i did not look this up.

  • leap seconds are being added to the years now because the rotation of the earth is slowing down, thus lengthening the years.
and about the gregorian calander... it is still not perfect, in about 3000 years we will be one day off of the season... but i'm sure we will dealw ith that then.

  • i once heard beauty was in the eye of the beholder. And you called her knowledge beautiful. How do you see knowledge? Is there a specific drug you need to be on?
