The Year 2005 to Have 'Leap Second' Added

All Things Considered, July 7, 2005 ยท The international body that keeps our clocks running on time has decreed that a leap second is needed. So 2005 will be one second longer than 2004. The second will be added just before midnight on New Year's Eve.

Most of you dont get the part about a leap second, but what I don't get is how they say 2005 is a second longer than 2004 when 2004 was a leap year. Can someone explain this to me?

  • i think that they are dumb in the way that they explained it, anyway what i think they meant to say is that they are adding an unplanned second to the year, unlike the added day which is planned. so yeah that doesn't make sense.

  • So you are saying we have to wait one more second to celebrate New Year's. Dang, I can't wait that long!
